OK...this may be a sensitive question, since it involves race, but really, there's nothing behind it except trivia...

Someone at work posed the question: Who was the last team to field an all-white team in the World Series? His answer was the Yankees, in 1978.

But when I actually looked it up, I couldn't verify that...the closest I could find was in Game 2 that year (Link) (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1978/B10110LAN1978.htm) when the Yankees fielding included:

Thomasson, CF
Pinella, RF
Spencer, 1B
Doyle, 2B
Dent, SS
Nettles, 3B
Munson, C
Hunter, SP

But...Roy White in LF. (Who was not "white").

So without turning this into a discussion on race, who WAS the last WS team to field (DH not included in "field") an all-white team?

On the bench that game, apparently.

As was Mickey Rivers.Against the righty Hooton, no less. I have no explanation.

But for a more traditional answer, there's game 7 of the 1975 World Series. The Red Sox starting lineup:

Carbo, lf
Doyle, 2b
Yastrzemski, 1b
Fisk, c
Lynn, cf
Petrocelli, 3b
Evans, rf
Burleson, ss
Lee, p

As far as I can tell, Cecil Cooper was the only American black on the team. I guess Latinos don't qualify as "white," though on the Sox they ranged in skin tone from the very light Diego Segui to the very dark Rogelio Moret.

Check the boxscore I linked to (repeated below).

Johnstone did not play in that game.

I have heard this question before. I believe the question is supposed to be: Who were the nine white guys on the field for the final out of the World Series? I don't know how to find the boxscore but check it out. That might be it. :dunno:

Baseball-reference.com has links to all the boxscores.
I can't confirm that it was the Yankees that this guy said it was, again unless it's a trick and you count Roy White.

Other Latinos were Tiant and Beniquez. African-American Jim Rice was on the regular season team. Jim should of been there for the series too ... but unfortunately he suffered that broken bone in his hand. Was it the hand -- or was it the wrist ... when getting hit by a pitch in September. Was it a Detroit pitcher that got him? I'm having trouble remembering right now. I only remember he was hitting over .350 against the Tigers that season. :(

Game 7 in 1975 is the honest answer ... starting line-up ... no African Americans and no Latinos. :) JL always knows his stuff.

Chambliss, Rivers and Randolph were all injured that game.

Randolph was injured the last Friday of the regular season in 1978 and missed the entire post season which is why he didn't play in that game.
