Even Kay is counting on the "incredible run of bad calls" that have gone against the Yankees. :(

Yes, that too. Barring problems with his fingernail, he should be able to go 110 pitches at this point. Anyways, I don't like to waste our pen so early in the series.

I don't even know what stuff he had. He was showing good breaking pitches, but didn't have his best command. Given that he wasn't throwing like he usually does, that's not a big surprsie.
As Abraham posted, this was done on purpose by Wang because Boston has hit him. Being a smart pitcher, he decided to change it up. I'm just amazed by how much he changed it up. I'd bet he threw 4 times more offspeed pitches than he ever has in a ML game before. Great job by him.

I wouldn't mind batter by batter.
He's been in some trouble tonight, despite his final line, and he's thrown 104 pitches. I think that should be it for him.

Great thing it worked.
However, in the grand scheme of things I'd like to see Wang trust his stuff enough to challenge and beat Boston with his sinker.

How many pitches does he have now? It shouldn't be too far above 100.
During trying times like these, I would throw Wang in there in the 7th. Put him on a tight leash. Worst thing that happens is he gives up a hit and they pull him. But now they can go staight to the top of the bullpen.
I think Wang's rough innings and higher pitch count is due to a different style he was trying tonight. Relied less on his sinking pitches and more on a fastball/slider combination. It resulted in more pitches out of the zone and far less contact.
Damon, Giambi, Rodriguez, and Cano are having damn good nights. This is a good sign, but you have to remember that having a good night against a knuckleballer and having a good night against Curt Schilling are two different things.

He's done that and gotten smacked... he's been downright bad against Boston in his career, so he adjusted.
Good player adjust, that's what he did.

It's only one game, but notice how good starting pitching, and getting into the Red Sox bullpen in the 6th, makes the Yankees look like the team with the 10.5 game lead and Boston like the team with "no fire."
This is the blueprint the Yankees have to keep following, with consistency, to get back where they belong.

He's not abandoning his groundball approach. He said in an interview to Taiwanese news that ever since the injury, his sinkers has lost some of their bites. He got his sinkers working perfect by the end of ST. And now his sinkers are on and off at best. He's still working on it, because he know that it's his bread and butter. He's forced to use his other pitches now. I'm glad he battled without his best stuff today. :)
