View Full Version : Words That Aren't What They Seem

This may be the dumbest post of all time on NYYFans, but this has irked me for a while.
There are two words that I know of that sound negative, but in turn, have positive meanings.
The first word is befriended. Off the bat, many may think (as well as myself), that this is a negative word and it means someone had stabbed his/her friend in the back and betrayed that person. Hell, betrayed starts with be and befriended starts with be.
In fact, the word befriend, according to dictionary.com is:
"to make friends or become friendly with; act as a friend to; help; aid"
The second word is humility. Once again, one can automatically assume it's talking about a person who humiliate, which according to dictionary.com is:
"to cause (a person) a painful loss of pride, self-respect, or dignity; mortify."
However, humility means someone is humble, the polar opposite of humiliated.
Whew. I feel better now that I have vented.

How can a person be nonchalant, but not chalant?
I happen to think that most of the posters in the Game Thread these days are very, very chalant.

Exactly! :)
At work, I'm often disgruntled. Then, I come home and, damnit, I'm disgruntled again!
Hopefully tonight, the Yanks win and I'll be gruntled before the weekend is over.

I actually clined once, back in 1987. That SUCKED! I was chalant, too, but sadly, not gruntled.

I find it really hard to describe, in writing, that a wound has pus. If something that shakes is shaky, what is something that has pus?

phlegm.
Now that's a word that even LOOKS disgusting. I mean, look at the spelling! It's ridiculous. Putting a p, h, l , and g & m that close together is just nauseating.
I DARE you to say that I'm wrong.
Go ahead.
Just try.

I can't relate to this post....it's very eccentric. At least you were able to get this off your chest. We don't want you going crazy and giving any ladies shaken baby syndrome because similar sounding words are torturing you.

Who hates when people say "for all intensive purposes?" I heard it the other day and corrected the person and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. What is it with that phrase that it gets so abused?

And what about disappointed? The opposite of the word is messed up- If you say you're appointed, that takes on a whole different meaning.

I can pick about 30 words or phrases in a 2 and a half hour span that come from a baseball announcers mouths that are absolutely not what they seem and would probably cause them lose their job if it wasn't a baseball game. Makes me giggle though. They never get old.
How can you be master of your domain if you masturbate?
Also, can people please stop typing "could OF" instead of "could have" or "could've".
"Could of" makes no sense.

Why do they call it a pair of pants, when only one of them is a pantleg?
And how come abbreviate means to shorten, if it's such a long word? Heck, even its abbreviation is long.
I also hate the phrase "Dream Job" or "Dream Date." I'm sorry, but all my dreams are either about me being caught naked in public, someone I know/love dying, or something that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I don't want them coming true.

I can say "ask" but for some reason I always have a hard time with "asked." I usually wind up dropping the "k" somewhere along the line and it comes out as "assed." Sometimes I'm tempted to go with "aksed" just to be less offensive.
