If Abreu starts hitting a lot of homeruns again he will be an absolute monster this year.

If Abreu hits .300 with 20 HR, he's gonna have at least 120 RBI because of all the runners on base.

Now, if he hits 30 HR and bats .320, He'll probably be closer to 135 RBI

Pavano's getting some awful luck. Two little bloopers, a weak ground ball, and a decently hit single = 2 runs.

PeteRFNY

I think Pavano, much like former Yankee mop-up reliever Dave Pavlas, needs to develop a "Pav-ball".

I thought he would be a harder thrower (94-96 MPH) with below average secondary stuff like Proctor or Bruney. Instead, he seems to top out at 92 MPH which means he needs a quality second pitch and he doesn't have one. I'm certainly disappointed in what I've seen from Britton this spring.

Same here.

I thought he was another live arm to add to the back end of the pen, along with Proctor, Farnsworth and Bruney. Now, it seems that 2 issues were decided today during this game:
1 - Phelps gets the RH portion of the 1B job over Phillips.
2 - Britton starts the season in AAA, as a setup guy.

Roster is becoming clear..

Phelps makes this team, period. Phillips does not, period. If Torre wants a guy with a "bellyful of guts" who "knows what NY is all about" and who offers nothing tangible to winning ballgames, then I am putting my own name out there, and I'll do it for less than Phillips. If we actually care about maybe putting the best team out there, Phelps is in..

Britton is dissapointing, Bruney has been lights out. He makes it, Villone bye bye, Henn hello.
I know Wang starts on the DL, so here is what I take north..

Giambi, Phelps, Cano, Jeter, Arod, Mientkiewicz
Abreu, Damon, Cabrera, Matsui
Posada
Pettitte, Mussina, Pavano, Igawa, Rasner
Rivera, Farns, Proctor, Henn, Vizcaino, Bruney, Myers

That makes a roster of 23 players. Backup catcher, another infielder are needed.
I have no love for any of our backup,s but Pratt seems like an emotional leader with playoff experience, so I'll give him the nod.
The backup IFer, I guess it is Cairo.

That is it. When Wang comes back, Rasner goes down to the minors. Karstens I am assuming will not come north with us on the roster at this point..
I think that is what I would go with..

Does anyone else see nothing special in Chris Britton?

Absolutely Not!!! He's been terrible this spring, and he cannot keep blowing games like this, especially in the regular season!! Maybe we can use him as trade bait later in the year??

Although you can not base a lot on spring training because the games do not matter, I do like what I am seeing from Josh Phelps and not what I am seeing from Andy Phillips! Although I still like Andy and don't necessarily want to trade him away, unless we can get someone decent for him (like a decent starter or reliever)!

Backup catcher I would give to Pratt because of the experience factor as well and because Wil Nieves can still use some work in the minors! Pratt's nearly done with his career as well, plus, it gives the media another former Met to discuss during the Subway Series!

Finally, there is no doubt that Cairo will be the backup infielder! He is always a clutch player and a great guy off the bench considering it doesn't look like Bernie will be there! Def. my pick as the backup INF!

I'm encouraged by Phelps and Pavano (knock on wood.) Disappointed in Britton given his good numbers last season, but hopefully he comes around in the minors and we get rid of Myers.

Almost 80 degrees today and the baseball season about to start? Yes sir!

So I haven't heard much on Phelps except his good ST... surfed on over to b-r.com and while he's been spotty, he looks like he can be an average hitter with 20-25 HR power... is his defense good enough that he could be the full-time 1B if Mientkeiwicz doesn't start hitting?

-tz
03-27-07, 09:35 PM
I taped this game on ESPN this afternoon and I just watched it ... was anyone else tearing their hair out because it was so hard to see any of the damb game? It seemed like every single inning ESPN had another guy to interview either in the dugout or (Peter Gammons) in darkest New England somewhere. And unless my rage is clouding my recollection, only one of them (Guidry) was associated with the Yankees.

ESPN, if you want to do an interview/MLB season preview show, by all means do it, and I might even watch ... but if you tell me you're going to show me a baseball game ... call me crazy, but I kind of want to see that! :enraged:

yankeemhp
03-27-07, 10:42 PM
Agreed -tz!! I usually love watching ESPN, but even that gets me annoying! Doing interviews with the managers during a game is alright, but besides that, it is just distracting!!
