It's 0-0 end of 2
Rasner starting for the Yankees
Ex-Yankee Shawn Chacon is going for the Pirates.
There's an MLB.com webcast (Pirates feed) - might be free:

Gameday link:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2006/gd.html?2007_03_23_nyamlb_pitmlb_1&brand=mlb
Tidbit:
Pirates announcers said that Chacon hit the low to mid 90s with his fastball at the end of last year, and is throwing hard this year.
He already has 3 K's in 2 innings
There's a gale wind blowing in, and it sounded like Matsui's flyout could have been a homer on most days
In 2006 for the Yankees, Chacon was 86-88 MPH.. hmmm...

Angel Chavez grounds out
Cairo line drive single to right
Rasner K's
Damon grounds out
Pirates announcers: Chacon looks like he will be in the pen IF he makes the Pirates team. He is expensive for the Pirates - I think there's a $6 mil price tag if he makes the team. So he might not make the cut...
Note: check the link I posted - is this game free?

Chacon done
McCluth pinch hits - K's
McCutcheon (the wunderkind) flies to shallow center
Jack Wilson crushes one to left - just misses a homer. Held to a single by Matsui
Cairo makes a great play on a grounder up the middle - forces out Wilson

That's interesting. He did not pitch very well last year. Slightly better with the Bucs but 6 million might be reasonable for a few teams. Depends on how he is pitching this ST. Maybe they should keep him and try and trade later on in the season.

With the lack of pitching, you'd think Chacon would have some value out there.

If you notice, there's no Gameday link on the site. It's not fully functional.
- it updates after the half-inning is over
- the fly balls are generally deeper than shown
It's wonky when you click players in the boxscore, too

Basak flies out
Chavez flies out to left on a nice play on the line by the leftfielder
Hilarious story - Pirates announcers are saying that the producer wanted Rudy Guiliani in their booth (the day in Tampa when Rudy caught the first pitch). Their producer asked George Steinbrenner if that was ok!

Rasner's curve gets a called strike 3 on Bay
Nady gets an infield dribbler single
Rasner is giving up hits on poorly-hit balls. Nice job so far.
I actually like the Pirates announcers - my granddad was from Wilkes-Barre, and was a big Pirates fan in the 60s and early 70s. One of their announcers is Steve Blass - ex-Pirate pitcher who lost command after winning 20 games once

The phone background noise was pretty annoying. I had to turn my sound off. Someone should also tell these guys that they need to speak into their mikes.
This is like authentic '50s baseball. The broadcast line is crackling, announcers voices going in and out.

Maybe the reason the sound quality and broadcast equipment is so bad is that they don't have any sponsors. There don't seem to be any commercial breaks. (Not that I miss them.)

I'm comlpetely on board with Phelps and Henn. Phelps has more ML experience than Phillips. Phillips didn't perform last year when given a larger role, and doesn't seem to be there yet after returning from his being with his mother. Henn has been great since converting from a starter to a reliever.

Unfortunately, I am no genius. Villone's pre- and post-All Star Break performances are well known. Maybe we could get Jim Bowden to fall for it, though. Maybe he would give up Chad Cordero for Villone.

If Villone makes the team, we owe him $2.5 million. If Henn makes the team, we owe him the league minimum.
But putting that aside, Villone is really showing nothing in camp so far, and today Joe backed off his earlier seeming-annointment of Villone to the 25-man roster. http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/2007/03/23/joe-torre-pregame-audio-2/

Personally, I just think it gives you that extra option. If you go with Henn/Britton/Bruney first and it doesn't work out, you probably don't have Villone/Myers to fall back on (i don't think Villone would report to minors). If you go with Villone/Myers, you have a backup plan even if they only last a week or two into the regular season.

And just like that, Bean's fabulous Spring is gone. I mean, now he's had one bad outing. So, he's clearly not ready for the MLs.

I'm sure Cashman will burn the phone lines looking to make a deal. Villone has some value - just being left-handed and breathing.
Remember - you've got a lot of young guys out of options - so you might see Villone dealt for a guy like Tony Pena Jr (if he doesn't make the Braves)

Colter strikes out the last hitter to get out of the inning
Thing is - Bean has fringy stuff with a deceptive delivery. It can fool minor-league hitters, and major-leaguers early in ST who aren't ready yet. It's why Colter always seems to do well early in ST, and always gets whacked at the end - especially by lefty hitters
I don't know if he'll ever be more than a ROOGY (poor man's Chad Bradford)

Very valid point. Its just a matter of whether the flexibility or $2.5 million is more important. Assuming that the decision makers see the players as in the same neighborhood come April 1.
