“Boston was my first choice,” Sheffield said yesterday before his new team, the Detroit Tigers, lost, 7-6, to the Red Sox in Grapefruit League play. “But things happen for a reason. Sometimes you don’t get to go where you wanted to go.”
...
“I felt like driving in 120-something runs should secure your position, and it never did mine from Day 1,” Sheffield said.
“I never drove in less than 121, I never hit less than 34 home runs, but that wasn’t good enough.”

He was planning on signing with Boston if the Yankees didn't pick up his option. Maybe it had something to do with Cashman excersising the option then shipping him off to Detroit. Either way, Cash got good deal for him while managing to keep him away from us... not a bad day's work.

Manny and Sheff in the same outfield would set a new record for non-chalance on defense.

If they had still signed Drew and moved him to center, it would have been the worst defensive outfield in history... but oh my the offense would have been remarkable. Hell, even with Crisp it may have been the worst in history, heh.

Maybe Gary was expecting the Yankees to rename the new stadium after him, or to be carried onto the field on a gold cart by servants. I have no clue what more he expected them to do for him to show him respect.

I never thought about it that way. You'd think that being born with enough talent to be a star in MLB would be enough. Some people are never satisfied. ;)
Manny Ramirez looks like a lunch lady with that bag on his head. Oh... wait... wrong slugging outfielder who plays poor defense.

Agreed - but, Sheff was a hell of a hitter when his game was on. He had tremendous power....the 1st Base stint was unnecessary.
I never wanted Sheff. I wanted Vlad.
I wish they would have prioritized re-signing Pettitte as #1 that offseason rather than getting Sheffield, instead of taking Andy for granted and simply assuming that he'd stay.
sheff feels the Yankees should've granted his extension...i don't see why that's so hard for you all to understand. He was the most consistent yankee until he injured his wrist, I think the Yanks should've given him his extension, but hopefully Sanchez and the other arms we got will be worthwhile

Maybe you forgot about 2006 when you failed to reach your 34-HR, 121-RBI minimum because you were limited to 39 games when you bumped into the muscle-bound, hulking 4-foot-8, 109-lb. monster that is Brian Roberts.
Maybe you forgot that you also hit a whopping .216 with 1 homerun and 5 RBI in 12 playoff games with the Yankees and were part of that wonderful offense-disappearing-act that gave the 2004 pennant to the Red Sox.
Maybe you forgot that we chanted "MVP" in your first year and we only grew tired of you when your brusied vagina forced Cashman to bring in a guy who could produce for the team, QUIETLY go about his business, and actually hit behind a runner on second with nobody out.
Maybe you forgot that part of the reason that you feel under-appreciated is because everything you did in a Yankee uniform showed all of us who preferred Vladimir Guerrero that we were absolutely right.
Maybe instead of bitching about how you were treated in New York, you should blame your uncle because he's the only reason that you ever saw a day in the Big Apple.
Maybe you don't realize that every time you open your mouth you make Yankee fans so happy to have Bobby Abreu in right field.

Sheffield has a big mouth and a bad attitude, he always has. He doesn't really think before he talks, and most of the time when he leaves a team that fanbase ends up disliking him. I wonder why?

The Yankees offered Andy more money when they realized that he was bolting for Houston. They tried to buy him back after they realized their plan ("their" does not include Cashman) was going to backfire.

My bad . . . Roberts was the one who broke his arm in the first base collision a few years back. Right type of play, wrong incident. But at least Roberts had a real reason to go on the DL.
P.S. I won't edit like some other people. I'll leave my error and take it like a man.

can definitely say that the Sox won't miss having to face him 19 times a year, though. He was one of the scarier parts of the lineup. Like you wouldn't mind not seeing Ortiz or Manny anymore.

I don't really agree with this comparison for two reasons- #1. Sheff, despite his aggressive approach (and murderous swing) worked counts and was an on base machine. #2. Abreu does have good power. The number of walks Abreu will draw over Sheff is only presented by Yankee fans (and rightfully so) as partially closing the gap between Abreu's 20-30 HR power and Sheff's 30-40 HR power.

Todd Jones and Gary Sheffield were discussing their high school careers Sunday. "Did you know that he went his whole senior year without striking out?" Jones asked later. "I might be the only player in major-league history who only hit .295 in high school." Sheffield has 971 career strikeouts, the fifth fewest in major-league history for any player with at least 450 home runs (behind Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig and Mel Ott). http://www.mlive.com/sports/statewide/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1174263006177030.xml&coll=1

Hopefully we can do that again and Abreu can light Bostone up again. But I'm kinda worried we were just at the right place at the right time. I'm starting to think that if Varitek was there we may have not been able to win the series by that much.
But that was a very happy moment of 2006.
