View Full Version : Spring Training 3/8/07 Yankees at Atlanta
I'm guessing this one's mostly a B squad game, being after a night game and on the road. Probably not televised

Reese
Nieves
Mussina
Jeter, "The People's Choice" (credit Atlanta announcer for that title), also grounds out
aaaaand Cano grounds out. Exciting, that was like 7 pitches. Guess Hudson's 2-seamer is working

Based on what you've seen so far in ST, who do you want see the 4th outfielder if Melky has to start due to injury (like if Abreu isn't ready for opening day, for example?)
Kevin Reese or Kevin Thompson? Or maybe Sardinha?
simmy886
03-08-07, 12:38 PM
I think it will be KT because of his toolsy-ness (bunting, pop, speed) but Reese and Sardinha have been impressive as well.
Double, 2 flyouts, inning over
simmy886
03-08-07, 12:40 PM
If the Braves are gonna compete with Mets and Phillies, they need Hudson and Hampton to rebound. It is completely possible, imo, although unlikely that both have 30+ starts of solid pitching.
I think it will be KT because of his toolsy-ness
Well, he's a better hitter and baserunner than Reese, I'm guessing he's a better fielder. Sardinha should probably play an entire season at AAA so he can get a full season of at-bats just in case he develops enough to be a major league hitter (I dont think he's a very good fielder)

Right I agree. How is KT defensively?
Unfortunately neither KT nor Sardinha have succeeded yet at the AAA level, hopefully this is the year and we get some outfield depth in our system so we can have the same type of reinforcements as last year when Guiel and Bernie stepped up and produced like adequate major leaguers (as opposed to a guy like Andy Phillips, although that's another position altogether)
I guess DeSalvo didn't get sent down to minor league camp along with White. Huh, who'da thunk it?

Jeter 2nd and Cano 3rd. A sign of things to come 4 years down the road?
Right I agree. How is KT defensively?
I get the feeling he has good range and makes ok reads, but is erratic. Should be fine in the corner positions, solid arm. Probably average to below average in CF. I'm not an expert on this, someone else could tell you better

IMO Unless someone did a scientific, convincing study, your opinion is as good as anyone's. I actually see the same thing. My perception tells me he's a bit like Cano, he can make some nice plays and then some ugly ones. I haven't seen enough of him yet though.

I'd have to say... that if the managers were smart... Giambi would play the field and Phelps will DH...
Phelps has DH'ed his whole career if the team attempted to play him...
Since like 2001? I think... I don't think he has played over 120 games in the field.

Either he threw alot of changeups, his velocity was WAY down on his FB, or the gun was off, but he threw alot of pitches that registered at 84-86MPH.
Curve looked really good though.
He missed locations a bit. balls tailed back across the plate.

Yeah it'll be interesting, because I don't think Giambi's as big a negative in the field as people say. He scoops the ball out pretty well. He has range and throwing issues, but in general how important is first base defense anyway?

Its pretty important. I hold my breath when Giambi has to turn two. It never seems like its going to happen.
I thought the movement on DeSalvo's fastball was really good. He showed an ok change, ok slider, and pretty good curve in the inning. However, he had no command of anything (typical of him), and the ump therefore gave him nothing close, so he fell behind every batter. His stuff is fine, but he can't get by anywhere with that lack of control

Giambi's offense waaaaaay counterbalances any defensive flaws. That said, he needs to DH so that he can keep those knees strong. That is why he is trying to use the opposite field. He needs his knees strong to be able to stay back. He's not been able to do that the past few years.

Yea but there was like a 50 point difference in his batting average when he wasn't playing the field. We just need to get him comfortable with sitting on the bench for an hour or so at a clip before he gets a chance to do something.

That's not so true if you take out all the times he was the DH solely because he was injured. And even he finally admitted last year that he can learn to DH.

That's it? Maybe he looks like a giant standing next to Harris (who might be a tad smallish). The guy looks tall and lanky.
Truthfully I don't remember him much when he was with Toronto. I would love him to force his way onto the roster.

Infield single on a funky hop, and the bases are loaded with no one out.
infield single
bases loaded, no one out for Cannizaro

Yeah he looks bigger than that. I would have guessed 6-5.

Cannizaro was inside the 45-foot baseline, so with the force at home, there's 2 out.
Cannizaro has to feel like a horse's rear

The insanity of the Torre system -- history counts more than talent. He has probably cost us two more World Series.

If Phelps gets cut for the Automatic Strikeout, then there IS no justice.

Phelps is that dude.
I hope so. Even if the guy is only to start/pinch hit against lefties, it would make me feel a little more confident with the first base situation.

ShaneTravis

Well, Phelps won't be pinch running anytime soon. Cut down at third. Running in quicksand.

Sardinha picks up an RBI single to make it 5-3, but a runner gets thrown out at 3rd. Inning over.
Villone will pitch.

Glad to hear the Yankees won ;)
- What was the Final Score?
- How did Mussina do?
I was just skimming through this thread and I see that Sardinha got an RBI single. He's really impressing this spring. So is Phelps.
Go Yankees. They are starting the 2007 season off great. :NY:
thanks everyone for the play-by-play. good game!

Gameday sucked. :P
which is strange because for the first few innings it was keeping pace with the real time action...
I am not saying everyone can afford this, but Game Day Audio is $14.95
per season

I'm looking forward to school tomorrow. My global teacher is a Braves fan, I have no idea why, but he is. It's going to be fun rubbing this win in his face. Even though it's Spring Training.
