Excellent article, I thought, and very clear in its methodology. Not sure that the sample sizes are large enough, and I wonder if park factors/pitching staff might affect the results, but the final rankings pass the smell test for me.

For those interested:

Bobby Abreu - marginally below-average
Melky Cabrera - significantly above-average
Johnny Damon - bloody awful

Be seeing you,

The Johnny Damon comparison visual link was a nice touch, don't you think? (very sabermetric)

Thanks for posting this. Though this doesn't bode well for the Sox. Coco and JD Drew both rank in the bottom third for their positions, heh. Manny is 3rd in the majors for left fielders, but we all know that outside of having a great arm, he has little to offer defensively. Though, he does play the wall well... that's something, I suppose, heh.

You also have to wonder if the wall is part of his ranking. The author said the splits didn't show a difference, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't impact him.

Manny does have a good arm but what makes his arm so good is his quick release.

Speaking of Hardball Times, the entire book this year is excellent with some really good and informative articles.

Yes it is. I had a chance to read it the last couple days and was very impressed. I found the articles on flyball, groundball, line drive hitters and batted balls very interesting...

By the way, I used this same method to rank the arms of outfielders from the full Retrosheet era, which roughly covers the years from Roberto Clemente (http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Roberto%20Clemente) through Juan Pierre (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/stats/players/index.php?lastName=Pierre). Actually, the rankings pretty much go from Clemente to Pierre, as well.
